Known for the construction of air-cooled Deutz Diesel engines (the “Magirus”) especially used in trucks and firefighters.

-In aviation, Deutz, is like the heiress of Oberursel, since its main facilities for the Aviation Division were from that brand.

-Oberursel was famous for its rotary engines for the Fokker DR-1 in WWI.

-In WWII KHD built BMW engines and in 1942 the Oberursel factory was gradually expanded, even opening new plants in the Taunus mountains.

-The DZ-700, a 2-stroke, eight-cylinder radial model is shown below.

-It was designed in secret in 1937.

-In Memorabilia it is mentioned as a rotary radial, but this has to be confirmed, because it does not seem so.

KHD is a descendant brand of the Otto firm, and worked in the old Oberursel factories.

The DZ-710 2-stroke diesel engine that was manufactured during WWII is not well known. It had 16 opposed-piston cylinders, was liquid cooled and gave 2,700 CV. (see Klockner-Humbolt-Deutz).

-The DZ-720 consisted of two DZ-710 engines configured in “H” and gave 5,400 CV (32 cylinders).

-The DZ-700 was an 8-cylinder radial engine from 1940, with 118 Kw.

-Around 1960, KHD built the English Orpheus 803 for the German Fiat G-91.

-With Rolls-Royce they develop the APU model T-112 and participate in the construction of the T-53 and T-64 turbines with other companies.

-With Snecma, MTU and Turbomeca they build the Larzac 04 with a thrust of 2,966 lbf.

-As a totally own turbine, they made the T-117 for RPV’s, with 236 lbf of thrust.

-The T-317 for light aircraft with 274 lbf of thrust is very similar in performances and size to the T-117.

-As APU, the single and separate chamber model as shown below.

-It gives 100 CV at 50,000 rpm. It is the T-16 model weighing 80 Kgs.

-It gave way to the T-212, an air compressor for the experimental Kiebitz RPV helicopter, which was in fact a T-112 turbine coupled to a compressor.

-The T-312 is an APU derived from the T-112 and is installed on the Panavia / Tornado.

-The KHD model T-312 was mounted on the Caproni-Vizzola, C22J twin-jet.

From Appendix 9: We obtained an illustration of the DZ-720 that does not appear in the main text. This engine is two stroke and has 32 cylinders giving 5,400 CV.

-In fact it is an H-mount of two 16-cylinder Dz-710 with 2700 CV. It is very curious. This engine was developed in WWII.

-In the Klockner Humbolt Deutz chapter there is an extension on the Dz-720. We now have photographs of the Dz-710.

-On a website somewhere in the Internet, these engines are wrongly cited as "inverted" Beardmore Typhoons.

The author of this edition of Aeroengines AtoZ, through Aeroteca, collaborated on Version 2 of this video, which is presented here.

To understand the operation of the connecting rods, the 1929 Continental R 670 single-cylinder engine was chosen.

A demonstration of Version 3, improved at the author's suggestion, is also available on YouTube at a later date. This version shows bronze valve guides, improved valve spring movement, and the split crankshaft counterweights and front bearing balls also move.
